Two people call us in the same week, both wanting a Level 2 charger, both in Kent. One pays about $1,100. The other pays about $5,800. Neither number is wrong.
That gap is the whole reason this post exists. Almost every “EV charger installation cost” article you will find quotes a national average and leaves it there, which is useless when the variable that decides your price is a panel you have never opened and a wire run nobody has measured. In Kent the price is set by three things: how much room your panel has, how far the charger sits from that panel, and whether Puget Sound Energy has to get involved.
Below are five job types we quote constantly here, broken into line items so you can see where the money actually goes.
A note on the numbers. All figures are approximate and reflect what this kind of work generally runs in Kent and the surrounding King County valley as of 2026. Material costs move, and your house is not any of the five houses described here. Treat these as a way to understand the shape of a quote, not as a price list. We give free written estimates and the number we put in writing is the number you pay.
What is actually in an EV charger quote
Six line items show up on nearly every one:
The charger itself. A Tesla Wall Connector runs roughly $450 to $500. The Tesla Universal Wall Connector, which adds a J1772 adapter for non-Tesla vehicles, is closer to $600. Other Level 2 units from ChargePoint, Emporia, Grizzl-E and similar land somewhere between $400 and $700. Many customers buy their own and we install it, which is fine.
The breaker. A 50 or 60 amp two-pole breaker, roughly $40 to $120 depending on your panel brand. Older or obsolete panels cost more here because the breakers are harder to source, and some brands we will not put a new breaker into at all.
Wire and conduit. This is the line item people underestimate. A 60 amp circuit wants 6 AWG copper, and copper is priced by the foot. Twenty feet of it is a rounding error. Ninety feet of it, in conduit, through a crawlspace and up an exterior wall, is a real number.
Labor. Usually four to eight hours for a straightforward install, more when the run is long or the wall finish is difficult.
The permit. For a single new circuit in Kent, expect roughly $60 to $120. If the job includes a service change, the permit is larger, often in the $150 to $250 range.
The inspection. No separate charge from us. We schedule it and we stay with the job until it passes.
One thing worth knowing before you read further: the City of Kent does not run its own electrical inspection program. Permits and inspections inside Kent city limits go through the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries, and their electrical permits and inspections page confirms that a contractor you hire must purchase the permit themselves. If an installer asks you to pull the permit as the homeowner, that is a signal worth paying attention to.
Job 1: Panther Lake, 2006 build, charger on the garage wall behind the panel
The easy one. Two hundred amp panel, four open spaces, and the garage wall the customer wanted the charger on was about twelve feet from the panel with an unfinished stud bay in between.

Without the charger hardware, the install came to roughly $810.
If your house was built after 2000 around Panther Lake or one of the newer plats and your panel has room, this is probably close to your number. Load calculation still gets done, because a 2004 panel that was never sized for a heat pump plus a charger can surprise you, but it usually passes.
Job 2: East Hill split level, 1979, 100 amp panel that passed with load management
This is the most common EV job in Kent, and the most misquoted. The house had a 100 amp service, electric range, electric dryer, and a heat pump added in 2018. On paper it looked like a service upgrade candidate. The load calculation, run against actual metered usage under NEC 220.87 rather than a worst case assumption, came back with just enough headroom to add a managed 40 amp circuit.
So we installed a load management device instead of upgrading the service. The charger throttles or pauses when the rest of the house draws hard, which in practice the customer has never noticed, because nobody runs the dryer and the oven at 2am while the car charges.

Compare that to the roughly $4,500 to $6,500 a service upgrade would have cost. The load calculation is the cheapest hour of the whole project and it is the one step some installers skip.
I will be honest that load management is not always the better answer. If you are planning a second EV, an induction range or an ADU in the next few years, spending the money once on a 200 amp service is usually smarter than solving today’s problem twice. We say that out loud at the estimate.
Job 3: Scenic Hill, 1951 house, 100 amp panel that did not pass
Sometimes the calculation says no. This one did. Original 100 amp service, a panel that had been double tapped by a previous owner, and no realistic way to add a 48 amp continuous load.

Roughly $4,400 of that is the service upgrade. The charger portion was about $1,000.
Homeowners hear this number and get frustrated, which I understand. It helps to reframe it: you are not buying an expensive EV charger, you are buying a 200 amp service you were going to need within a decade anyway, and the charger is the thing that finally forced the timing. Resale, insurance, a future heat pump and a future second EV all sit on the other side of that panel. Job 4: Lake Meridian, detached garage 85 feet from the house
Kent has deep lots, and the detached garage or shop sitting a long way from the panel is a recurring theme out toward Lake Meridian and the Soos Creek corridor. Distance costs money for two reasons: the wire itself, and voltage drop. Push 48 amps down 85 feet and 6 AWG is no longer adequate, so the conductor size goes up, and so does the price per foot.
This customer already had power to the garage but only a 20 amp lighting circuit, so we ran a new feeder and set a small subpanel.

If we had been able to reuse an existing conduit path, trenching would have come off and this lands nearer $2,900. Ask any installer quoting a detached structure whether their number includes trenching, because that single question explains most of the spread between competing bids.
Long feeder runs to outbuildings are their own discipline, and if you are also adding a shop or an ADU it is worth reading about dedicated circuits before you decide how much capacity to run out there. Running one size larger while the trench is open costs very little. Reopening the trench in three years costs a lot.
Job 5: Downtown Kent townhouse, shared garage wall, HOA involved
The unglamorous one. Townhouse near downtown, dedicated garage stall, panel in a utility closet, and a homeowners association that needed to approve anything mounted on a common wall.

The electrical work was ordinary. The schedule was not. HOA approval added five weeks. If you are in an attached community, start that paperwork before you call an electrician, not after.
So what should a Kent homeowner budget?
Rough brackets, all approximate:
- Panel has capacity, short run, no complications: $800 to $1,500 installed, plus the charger
- Panel has capacity, longer or more difficult run: $1,500 to $2,500 installed, plus the charger
- Load management device instead of a service upgrade: add $400 to $900
- Detached garage or shop with a new feeder: $2,500 to $4,500
- Service upgrade to 200 amp required first: add $3,500 to $6,500
If somebody quotes you a flat rate over the phone without seeing your panel, they are quoting the first bracket and will find the others later. That is not always dishonest, but it is always a guess, and the guess never goes down.
Whether your panel can take it
The short answer is that a Level 2 charger typically wants a 40 to 60 amp circuit, and whether you have room depends on your service size, your heating type and what else in the house runs on electricity. Common questions
Is a hardwired charger better than a NEMA 14-50 outlet? Usually, yes. Hardwiring allows a higher continuous draw, avoids the failure mode where a cheap receptacle overheats behind the plug, and looks better. A 14-50 outlet install runs about $150 to $300 less. We install both, but for a car you plug in every night, hardwired is what I would put in my own garage.
Do I need a permit for an EV charger in Kent? Yes. Any new circuit requires one, and the contractor buys it. Unpermitted work turns up during home sales and can complicate an insurance claim after a fire.
How long does the install take? Most single circuit jobs are done in one visit. A service upgrade is a longer day and involves coordinating a meter pull with Puget Sound Energy, which is usually scheduled a week or two ahead.
Can I charge two EVs on one circuit? Some chargers support power sharing between two units on a single circuit. It works, though each car charges slower when both are plugged in. For most two car households in Kent this is cheaper than a second circuit and far cheaper than a service upgrade.
