Burning smell from an outlet: what to do in the ten minutes before an electrician arrives

If you are reading this while standing in a room that smells like hot plastic, skip to the next two sections and come back to the rest later.

The title says ten minutes. The truth is that the first sixty seconds carry almost all of the weight, and what you do in them comes down to one question: is anything burning right now, or does it only smell like something was?

If you see smoke, see flame, hear crackling, or the wall is warm

Get everyone out of the house. Then call 911 from outside.

Do not look for the source. Do not open the outlet cover. Do not go get the fire extinguisher out of the garage first. A burning smell with heat in the wall means the fire may already be inside the wall cavity, where you cannot see it and cannot reach it, and where it can travel along the framing faster than most people expect. Never put water on it. Water conducts, the circuit may still be energized, and you can be shocked through the stream.

Once you are outside and the call is made, if you can reach your main breaker safely from outside the house, for example a disconnect mounted next to the meter, shut it off. If it means going back inside, leave it. The fire department will handle power.

If there is a smell but no smoke, no flame, and nothing is hot

This is the more common version of the call, and it is still serious. Something in that box has been running hot enough to cook plastic. Here is the order I would do it in.

Stop using the circuit. Whatever was drawing power, turn it off.

If something is plugged into the outlet, check the plug first. Touch the back of your hand to it, not your fingertips. If it is cool and it comes out with normal effort, unplug it. If the plug is warm, discolored, or feels stuck, leave it alone and go straight to the breaker instead. Yanking on a plug that has partly melted into a receptacle can pull the whole device out of the wall with live conductors attached.

Kill the breaker for that circuit. If your panel is labeled and you trust the labels, switch off that one. If the labels are wrong or missing, which describes most panels I open in this city, switch off the main. Living without power for an hour beats the alternative. Leave the breaker off. Do not flip it back on to test whether the smell returns. That test tells you almost nothing and it re-energizes a connection that has already proven it cannot handle current safely.

Open a window and let the room air out, then check your smoke alarms while you are up. Press the test button on the ones nearest that room. If they are battery units stuck to a ceiling and you cannot remember the last time they were replaced, add that to the list.

Take a photo of the outlet before anyone touches anything, and write down what was plugged in and what else was running in the house at the time. Space heater, window air conditioner, vacuum, hair dryer, a power strip with six things on it. That detail matters when I get there and it will matter to your insurer if this turns into a claim.

Things people do that make it worse

Resetting the breaker repeatedly is the most common one. Every reset sends current back through a connection that is generating heat instead of carrying power cleanly.

Removing the cover plate to have a look is the second. There is no useful information behind that plate for a homeowner, the conductors on the sides of the device are live unless the breaker is off, and I have been called out to fix the outlet plus the finger.

Swapping in a new outlet yourself, which I do understand the appeal of, usually treats the wrong thing. If the cause is upstream in the circuit, the new device will cook exactly like the old one did.

Running an extension cord from another room as a workaround is worth naming too, because it is so reasonable and so bad. You have just moved a load onto a circuit that was not sized for it, through a cord that is almost certainly undersized, and the original problem is still sitting in the wall.

Also, do not spray air freshener at it or paint over a scorch mark before someone looks. That mark is diagnostic. I can read a lot from the pattern of the discoloration.

What that smell actually is

Household wiring is insulated in thermoplastic, and the devices are molded from it. When a connection heats up past what the plastic can take, it off gasses before it burns, which is why the smell arrives before anything visible does.

People describe it in a few consistent ways, and the differences are useful.

Sharp, acrid, like hot plastic or melting Lego. That is thermoplastic insulation or a device body cooking. Take it seriously.

Fishy, or faintly like urine or ammonia. Same thing, and it surprises people every time. Overheating PVC and some flame retardant compounds give off that specific odor. If a room smells like old fish and nobody has been cooking fish, look at the outlets and the switches.

A sharp, metallic, swimming pool sort of smell. That is ozone, and it points toward arcing rather than slow overheating. Arcing is the failure mode that starts fires.

Dusty or singed for the first hour of the season, coming from a heater or a baseboard rather than an outlet. That is usually dust burning off the element and it passes. If it comes from the wall itself, or keeps going, treat it like the others.

Why your breaker did not trip

This is the part that catches people out, and I get asked about it on almost every one of these calls. The outlet smelled like it was on fire and the breaker sat there doing nothing. Is the breaker broken?

Usually not. A breaker watches how much current is flowing through the circuit. It has no idea how well that current is flowing. A loose screw terminal or a tired push in connection creates resistance, resistance generates heat right at that point, and none of it necessarily pushes the total current on the circuit past the breaker’s rating. Twelve amps through a bad connection is still twelve amps as far as the breaker knows. Meanwhile the connection itself is hot enough to char the device around it.

The protection that does catch this is an arc fault breaker, which looks for the electrical signature of arcing rather than raw amperage. Washington requires them on branch circuits in new residential work. Most Federal Way homes built before that requirement have none, and adding them is one of the more worthwhile upgrades available on an older electrical panel.

There is one case where the breaker really is the problem. If your panel is a Federal Pacific Stab-Lok or a Zinsco, both installed all over Federal Way in the 1970s, the breakers have a documented history of failing to trip when they should. A burning smell in a house with one of those panels moves the panel to the top of the list.

The three causes I find most often here

Loose push in connections account for more of these calls than everything else combined. On the back of a receptacle there are small holes that a wire can be pushed into, which is faster than wrapping it around the screw terminal. The contact area is tiny. Thirty or forty years of thermal cycling, a vacuum cleaner plugged in and out a few thousand times, and the grip relaxes. Then you have resistance where you wanted a connection. Almost every house built in the 1970s and 1980s around here is full of them, and they tend to fail in clusters because the same electrician wired the whole house the same way in the same week.

Aluminum branch wiring is the second, and it is specific to a narrow window. Homes wired roughly between 1965 and 1973 sometimes have aluminum rather than copper on the 15 and 20 amp circuits. Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper, oxidizes differently, and works itself loose at terminations that were never designed for it. If your house is from that window and an outlet has started to smell, the odds that this is the cause go up sharply, and the fix is bigger than one device. Overload on an undersized circuit is the third, and it is seasonal. Space heaters are the usual culprit, especially plugged into a bedroom circuit through a power strip on a cold January night. A 1500 watt heater is pulling around 12.5 amps by itself, which is most of a 15 amp circuit before anything else joins in. The correct answer there is often a dedicated circuit rather than a new outlet.

Two prong outlets with no ground are a related issue. Replacing one with a three prong receptacle without running a ground does not fix anything, it hides it, and we deal with outlet grounding in older Federal Way homes constantly.

What happens when we show up

I find the affected device and check the temperature of every device on that circuit, rather than only the one you called about. Then the device comes out and I look at the terminations, the conductor insulation behind it, and whether the box itself has heat damage.

Then I check the rest of the circuit. This is the step that gets skipped by whoever is charging you the least, and it is the one that matters, because if one push in connection has let go after forty years, its siblings are the same age and were installed the same afternoon.

After that we look at the panel, the breaker serving the circuit, and whether the conductor size matches what is protecting it.

You get told what I found whether or not you hire us to fix it. If it is one failed outlet on an otherwise healthy circuit, that is a small job and I will say so. If it is aluminum wiring throughout the house, I will say that too, and I will not pretend a single receptacle swap solves it.

Every repair gets a permit where one is required, and an inspection before we call it done.

Questions we get asked

The smell has gone away. Do I still need someone to look?

Yes. The smell stopping means the heat source stopped, which usually means whatever was drawing power got switched off. The bad connection is still there and it will heat up again the next time that circuit is loaded. Roughly half the outlets I have replaced with visible charring belonged to people who had smelled something months earlier and moved on.

Can we sleep in the house tonight with the breaker off?

If there was no smoke, no flame, and nothing was hot to the touch, and the breaker for that circuit is off, you are in reasonable shape. Confirm your smoke alarms work before bed. If you have any doubt at all about whether something in the wall is still warm, do not weigh it up yourself at eleven at night. Call us, or call 911 if it has progressed.

Is it just the outlet or the whole circuit?

Cannot be answered honestly from a description. What I can tell you is the pattern: if the house was wired with push in connections or with aluminum, the problem tends to be the circuit rather than the device, and fixing one outlet buys you time rather than a solution.

Will homeowners insurance cover this?

That depends entirely on your policy and on what the cause turns out to be, so ask your agent rather than me. Two things help you either way. Keep the photos you took, and make sure any repair is permitted and inspected. Unpermitted electrical work is one of the things that complicates a claim later.

The smell is coming from the panel, not an outlet.

Different urgency. Do not open the panel cover. If you can safely reach the main breaker to shut the whole house down, do it, and call immediately. A hot connection inside a panel has far more current available to it than a bedroom receptacle does.

I rent. What do I do?

Report it to your landlord or property manager in writing today, and keep the copy. Washington’s residential landlord-tenant act puts responsibility for maintaining the electrical system on the landlord. If nobody responds and you believe there is a fire risk right now, that is a 911 call, not a maintenance ticket.

Should I be worried if it is a brand new outlet?

Somewhat more, not less. A device that fails within a year or two of installation usually points to how it was installed or to a mismatch between the conductor, the breaker, and the load. New does not mean correct.
